A woman who lives ‘where Beyonce and Jay Z vacation’ says it’s not as “boogie and fancy” as everyone thinks.
Casey Evans, 24, grew up in Remsenburg, in the Hamptons, New York, from the ages of five to 16 before moving to Manhattan, New York.
She says people “assume everyone from the Hamptons is rich,” but claims that’s far from the truth.
Casey insists that locals “get mad” at tourists – causing traffic jams and being rude to hospitality staff.
But Casey – who lived in a five-bed house with her parents and two siblings – says the Hamptons will “always be home” and she misses the community.
Casey, who works in social media and marketing, said: “I feel like people always assume you’re very rich [if you’re from the Hamptons].
“You walk around with designer bags and drive a Lamborghini, but that’s not how the locals are, but how tourists act.
“The locals are normal people, they are the locals who work for the tourists who come to the Hamptons.
“It’s not as fancy and fancy as everyone thinks.”
The Hamptons is a retreat for celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, Julianne Moore and Beyonce.
But Casey says there are “a lot of misconceptions” about living there.
She said: “I would say the Hamptons is a normal town, in the summer you go to the beach and maybe some restaurants.
“Social media has made it popular, I’ve seen lots and lots of videos on social media of people going out there.
“Since Covid, it’s definitely become busier – everyone wants to move there.”
Casey said some locals get bored in the summer months as tourists fill the streets and beaches.
But other locals love the busy months as they rely on it for a living.
Casey said: “It’s definitely gotten worse over the years – after Covid, a lot of people moved here to escape the city.
“I would say the locals get annoyed with the tourists, the traffic can get super crazy in the summer.
“What would be a 20-minute journey can turn into an hour plus.
“There’s a great mix of people in the Hamptons from millionaires and celebrities to middle and lower class people.”
Casey claims a lot has changed since she grew up there and there has been a lot of housing development to keep up with demand.
She said: “The town I grew up in only had a post office and school – you used to have to drive 30 minutes to get groceries.
“Now everything around is built.
“They rebuilt the whole of Westhampton Beach and now it looks really nice, whereas it used to be more chill and casual.”
Casey and her family moved to Manhattan when she was 16, but says the Hamptons will always be home to her, and she tries to return whenever she can.
She said: “I need to get away from the city every now and then to see some nature.
“Now I’m back to being a Hamptons tourist.
“I love the beaches and the people there – I’m definitely an ocean girl.
“I’m very grateful to have grown up there.”
