This massive Lake Michigan mansion is asking $35 million — the most expensive home for sale in its state

A 20,000-square-foot historic estate in the Chicago suburb of Winnetka has been listed for $35 million, making it the most expensive property for sale in Illinois.

Built in the 1920s, the century-old stunner is being sold by its longtime owners — current financier and former Goldman Sachs global co-head of prime debt Muneer Satter and his wife, Kristen Hertel — who bought it for $9.5 million dollars in 2002, the Wall Street Journal reported. A big selling point: a waterfront location.

“This is an iconic lakefront property on the north shore” of Lake Michigan, Jena Radnay of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate, which holds the listing, told The Post of the “spectacular” complex.

Other amenities include 223 feet of sandy beach; a commercial-grade boardwalk wrapping around the lakefront; and a “door boat, with advanced doors, with his-and-hers ‘bluff’ dressing rooms and a hotel-level infinity pool and spa,” Radnay added.

During their 22 years of ownership, Satter and Hertel extensively renovated the French-style Normandy mansion, reportedly sinking about $35 million into restoring and expanding it to its current 2.3 acres. The couple, Radnay told the medium, are selling as they downsize; most of their five daughters are now grown and gone.

The limestone residence was originally built for Popular Mechanics publisher Henry Haven Windsor Jr., who occupied the property with his opera singer wife, Louise Hunter.

A number of period details remain from Windsor’s time there, including the house’s original stained glass windows, parquet floors, several decorated ceilings and the dining room’s mahogany panelling.

Today, the compound is listed as having seven bedrooms and many other inclusions. These are a wine cellar, multiple offices, library, a palm room decorated with tropical murals – and, on the grounds, ornamental hedges, botanical gardens, a 10-car heated motor court and a custom Lannon stone fountain .
